Five Signs You’re Heading for Burnout (Before you hit the wall).

Burnout rarely announces itself. It doesn't kick the door down — it creeps in through disrupted sleep, a shorter fuse, a body that stops bouncing back the way it used to. By the time most people recognise what's happening, they've usually been running on empty for months.

As a medical herbalist working with clients across Herefordshire, Shropshire and online, I see the same pattern again and again: capable, conscientious people who kept pushing through the early warning signs because they didn't know what they were looking at — or didn't feel they had permission to stop.

Here are five of the most common signs that you're heading for burnout, not just having "a busy patch."

1. You're Tired in a Way That Sleep Doesn't Fix

Ordinary tiredness lifts with a good night's sleep or a lazy weekend. Burnout fatigue doesn't. You wake up already depleted, drag yourself through the day on caffeine and willpower, and still feel wrung out come evening — even after eight hours in bed.

This is a sign that your nervous system and stress-response pathways are running in a state of chronic overdrive, rather than cycling properly between activity and genuine rest. Sleep alone can't undo that; the underlying pattern needs addressing.

2. Small Things Feel Disproportionately Overwhelming

A cancelled plan. An unexpected email. The washing machine breaking down. None of these are catastrophes on their own — but when you're heading for burnout, they can feel like the last straw, triggering a wave of irritability, tears, or blank panic that feels out of proportion to the trigger.

This isn't a character flaw or a sign you're "not coping well enough." It's a nervous system with a shrinking window of tolerance — one that's been asked to absorb too much for too long without enough recovery in between.

3. You're Getting Sick More Often (Or Can't Shake Things Off)

Chronic stress suppresses immune function. If you've noticed you're picking up every cold going round, that a minor bug knocked you out for a fortnight instead of a few days, or that you're dealing with recurring flare-ups of something — skin issues, digestive upset, cold sores — your body may be signalling that its resources are stretched thin. This is especially common in the run-up to, and aftermath of, viral illness, where fatigue and low immune resilience can linger long after the initial infection has cleared.

4. Your Gut Has Joined the Rebellion

Bloating, irregular digestion, new food sensitivities, or a stomach that seems to react to stress before your mind even registers it consciously — the gut and nervous system are in constant conversation, and when one is under pressure, the other usually follows. Digestive symptoms that appear alongside fatigue and low mood are rarely a coincidence; they're often part of the same underlying picture.

5. You've Lost Your Sense of "Recovery"

Perhaps the clearest sign of all: you can no longer remember what it feels like to be genuinely, properly rested. Weekends, holidays, even time off sick don't seem to touch the underlying exhaustion. You're not just tired — you've lost your baseline for what "well" feels like.

This is often the point at which people finally reach out for support, and it's completely understandable. It's also very treatable — but it does need a proper, structured approach rather than another bath and an early night.

What Helps From Here

None of this means something is broken beyond repair. It means your body has been asking for support for a while, and it's worth listening properly now rather than waiting for a fuller collapse.

The most effective route out of burnout isn't a single supplement or a single lifestyle tweak — it's addressing the gut, immune system and nervous system together, since these three systems tend to feed one another in a fatigue-perpetuating loop. That's exactly the approach I take with clients, and it's the foundation of my 12-week Fatigue, Post-Viral & Burnout Programme, starting 15th September.

Over 12 weeks, you'll get structured, personalised support to help your body come out of survival mode and rebuild genuine, lasting resilience — rather than just white-knuckling through another busy season.

Spaces are limited to keep the group properly supported — if any of the five signs above sounded familiar, it's worth taking a look before registration closes on 2nd september.
